![]() ![]() When listening to Codeine there isn’t anything that really impresses me musically, yet the album has a fairly powerful feel. On the contrary to what I just stated, “Frigid Stars” is a great listen for those interested in melancholy, isolated albums. ![]() Towards the end of the album I start to lose interest just because every song essentially repeats the same formula and production techniques. Codeine have such a deserted, dreary sound making it difficult to listen to “Frigid Stars” in one sitting. While the raw production makes the music so depressing, I can also see the production conflicting with other listeners. Since “Frigid Stars” has such a lonesome and baron sound it can be a very demanding listen. Codeine frigid stars download skin#“Cave In” is a perfect example containing lines such as “Last night I dreamt your face/the skin was falling of/the flesh was turning grey.” Mixing together flawlessly with the depressing music, Immerwahr’s lyrics posses such a haunting and isolated vibe. A couple of songs off of “Frigid Stars” even show hints of post-rock “Pickup Song” and “New Year’s” shift from lazy guitar noodling into dense, spacey rock sessions. Stephen Immerwahr’s bright, almost helpless vocals ad onto the bleak and desolate feel that the music creates. Slow burners such as “Old Things” and “Gravel Bed” sound so powerful due to the ghostly guitar scales and heavy drum hits. One aspect that really ads onto the nocturnal atmosphere of “Frigid Stars” would be the production. Although Codeine are a bit bland compared to other slowcore acts “Frigid Stars” is a pioneering album that really helped the genre garner some acclaim. Containing ten songs that span just over forty minutes in length, “Frigid Stars” is an album that sucks the listener in and hypnotizes him until the very end. While other acts tagged as “sadcore” such as Low, Arab Strap, and Red House Painters are more or less led by one songwriter, Codeine have a more rock oriented sound involving every member of the band. Upon first listen it’s difficult to sit through just because the music is so bleak, gloomy, and absent of any optimism. Album DescriptionListening to Codeine’s “Frigid Stars” is a draining experience. See More Your browser does not support the audio element. Codeine here sound a touch cleaner than elsewhere on Frigid Stars, where the guitars can really sprawl when needed, but Brokaw's drumming and Immerwahr's great delivery mark it out as their version instead of merely a straightforward remake. An interesting cover surfaces a few songs in - "New Year's" (co-written by Bitch Magnet singer Sooyoung Park but not recorded by him until the first Seam album, Headsparks, two years later). Engle's lead guitar work throws in enough heartbreakingly strong moments to help - the sudden low swoop on "Pickup Song" is a standout, while the dark, forbidding drones on "Second Chance" are truly chilling. It avoids sounding repetitious by virtue of the dynamics - treat the entire album as an extended mood piece, and it works well. If one lets oneself go for the album's general feel, then it all flows together to make a touching, surprising experience, but those seeking variety aren't likely to be happy. Bassist Stephen Immerwahr's vocals lend to that feeling, softly ruminative, sometimes straining, but never sounding self-important or whining (though sometimes the lyrics are creepily macabre - check out the start of "Cave-In"). It isn't the narcotic hush of Low - there's actually a little more relative energy than that! - or sludgy stoner rock à la Black Sabbath, but something else entirely. There's a cryptic warmth in the slow tempos and feedback produced from the deliberate strumming and chords from John Engle and Chris Brokaw's guitars. ![]() ![]() As for the album, the tone isn't cold or unemotional, but simply gripped by a deep black mood, where everything seems on the verge of suddenly going wrong or collapsing. The cover of Codeine's Frigid Stars LP sets the mood well - a negative black and white shot of some stars, looking even more haunting as a result.
